Stephanie Scharf Featured in American Lawyer

In the May 2016 issue of The American Lawyer, Partner Stephanie Scharf was featured in the article, “Too Few Women in Court” which focused on Ms. Scharf’s innovative report, “First Chairs at Trial: More Women Need Seats at the Table.”  Ms. Scharf’s positive experiences as first chair at trial, and the recognition that many other women have been stymied in that role,  inspired her to conduct the research.  The study, written with co-author Roberta Liebenberg, was published by the American Bar Foundation and the American Bar Association Commission on Women in the Profession.  Drawing on a random sample of all cases filed in the U.S. District Court of Northern Illinois, the study generated first-ever data about the role that women play as trial attorneys and lead counsel in civil and criminal cases. Since its publication in Summer 2015, the research has received widespread acclaim from a national array of public and private sector bar groups, and was the subject of a standing-room only symposium in April 2016 sponsored by the United States District Court of Northern Illinois and the Chicago Bar Association.  For a copy of the First Chairs report, please click here.
